The Kingdom Series – ‘The Apocalypse, and the sons of God
Creation is Waiting For’
“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of
the sons of God” (Rom 8:19).
One of the most highly anticipated events of all time is recorded in Romans 8:19 where
creation is eagerly awaiting the revealing of the sons of God.
The phrase earnest expectation speaks of creation watching with an intense anticipation. In
other words all of creation is sitting on the edge of its seat and can’t wait for this to take place.
This is true partly because of what creation itself will experience.
“Because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption
into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Rom 8:21).
Remarkably the same Greek word translated revealing, referring to the sons of God, just
happens to be the same word used in Revelation 1:1 pointing to “the Revelation of Jesus
On the Isle of Patmos John described how the church is anticipating the revealing (the
disclosure, the appearing, the coming), the apocalypse ‘apokalupsis’ of Jesus Christ. Likewise
creation is waiting for the apocalypse of the sons of God. This is further explained in Romans as
being a cause for the increasing birth pangs to take place on the earth.
“For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together
until now” (Rom 8:22).
In the New Testament there appears to be at least three levels to what it means to be a son of
To eliminate any misunderstanding, Jesus is God the Father’s One and “only begotten Son”
(see John 3:16). Jesus is the only Son who was born of the Father sent because God so loved the
world. The Scriptures clearly declare, “for there is no other name under heaven given
among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus was the Son of God and the
Son of Man. He was unique, one of a kind and one with the Father.
The events surrounding the Lord’s second coming will pale in comparison to Him, the One
who is coming! Yet there is another apocalypse to occur on the earth. One that will demand a lot
of attention especially from creation who has been longing for this day.
First the scriptures confirm, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right
to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of
blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” John 1:12-13).
Being born again or born from above is the beginning of the journey into Christianity and opens
the door into the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, “unless one is born again, he cannot see’, or
later He says, ‘enter the Kingdom of God” (John 3:3, 5).
Becoming a child of God includes all those who receive and place their faith in Jesus. This is the
initial step into an adventure that will last into eternity. We as well as creation will witness
multitudes of men and women coming into the Kingdom of God as sons and daughters in the days
that are at hand. Yet there is something more creation is longing for.
Second, once salvation is settled and a relationship with God has begun we see a higher level of
what it means to be a son (or daughter) of God.
Paul exhorted the believers in Corinth to not allow themselves to “be unequally yoked
together with unbelievers”. He assured them how God promised to dwell in and walk among
them as their God. He reminds all of us of a further requirement of what it means to become a son
Therefore "Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not
touch what is unclean, and I will receive you." 'I will be a Father to you, and you
shall be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty." Therefore, having these
promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and
spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (II Cor 6:17-7:1).
The Apostle Paul is addressing believers who have been given promises. Yet having been
given promises alone was no guarantee they would walk in them. A responsibility given to sons
and daughters includes their making the choice to cleanse themselves, “from all filthiness of
the flesh and the spirit”, which would result in their “perfecting holiness in the fear of
the Lord” (II Cor 7:1).
The sons of God being revealed in this hour will be those who fear God above all others. The
fear of the Lord which is partly evidenced by the choice’s we make (see Pro 1:29), enables us
to “depart from evil” (Pro 16:6). Sons of God are those, “led by the Spirit of God”.
Those led by the Spirit of God choose everyday to “put to death the deeds of the body”
(Rom 8:14, 12).
A further meaning of the word sons refers to those who understand the privilege they have
been given and whose personal lives reveal the character expected of sons. Sons reflect the
nature and character of their father.
Because these sons walk on what is described in Isaiah 35:8 as the “Highway of
Holiness”, they will see the Lord (see Heb 12:14) working in their midst and in the lives of
others in ways many have only imagined. In humility they will direct the attention they might
receive to the One and only begotten Son of God in unprecedented fashion.
Finally, we see in the Scriptures the kind of sons of God all of creation itself is waiting for. In
addition to revealing the character of their Father, these will witness creation itself being freed
from the bondage of corruption and released into the glorious liberty all the children of God
have been called into.
Prior to the ultimate anticipated event known as the apocalypse, (the revealing, disclosure,
appearing and the coming) of the Son of God another highly anticipated apocalypse will take
place. The sons of God, the kind all of creation has been waiting for, will be revealed on the
The call and opportunity to participate in this first apocalypse is well underway and will
prepare the way for the one to come. There is much evidence that creation itself is now sitting
on the edge of its seats while the sons of God are arising out of theirs.
